I use a medicine ball regularly, for warming-up and light aerobic exercise. It can be used for: chest pass, ab twists, crunches, elephant twist, just make sure you try to raise your limits every once. It will also be able to be used to tone legs, arms, abs, there is really not much limit.

medicine-ball-workoutI have used different medicine balls in the gym occasionally as a supplement to my workout. However, these days I am training to become quicker by doing more explosive exercises.

Surface Material:

The grip is superb due to its sticky rubber construction but I will need to see how quickly the surface fades over time.  I did notice some soreness on my skin and finger tips after using it.

Size and Specs:

The ball has the similar size of a basketball but to me it looks smaller than an official men’s basketball. The ball should be inflated until
firm as a basketball.  There are a lot of exercises that you can do with dumbbells as a substitute for a medicine ball .

Weight Selection:

You NEED to know in advance exactly what type of exercises you intend to use it for, because that will determine the type of ball you need. I.e., soft or hard, large or small, rebounding or non-rebounding, etc), and its optimum mass for your needs. The Valeo is of the hard variety, and is intended primarily for things like plyometrics and rebounding.

Here’s my key point: If you’re using say 10 or 12 for moves like „chops“, I recommend starting 2+ lbs lighter for rebounding until you are well acclimated, especially for WALL rebounding (where you replace gravity’s role).

You might even want another (even lighter ball) specifically for wall use – like 10 for vertical rebounding, 8 for wall rebounding.

medicine ball reviewIf you plan to bounce it off a wall, make sure the wall surface is hard such as brick material and not drywall material. Also, the ball may leave scuff marks on certain surfaces. I like the black and blue color and it looks just like the picture featured on Amazon .

Size and Specs:

Thanks to the rubber and bouncy feature of this medicine ball, I can throw it up in the air and catch it without worrying too much about accidentally dropping it. However at 10 lbs. it is still a heavy object and you should not underestimate it and focus on catching it properly.

This medicine ball is also great for basketball training such as increasing your vertical jump and agility  but it is not for practicing your shots and despite its bounce, it is too heavy for dribbling. I appreciate the fold out sheet for suggested exercises but I recommend that you also research for different exercises to make the most use of it.

Weight Selection:

exercise with ballIts deeply textured surface and medium/small size (8.5″ in diameter) make it very easy to handle. ‘m glad I ended up with the combination of one smaller, lighter medicine ball and one bulkier, heavier medicine ball. The larger size of the Power systems ball makes it harder to handle – which is a good thing, because it makes it more of a workout to manipulate it.

For exercises like the squat press or medicine-ball curl, I prefer the larger size of the Power sysyems ball, while for exercises more focused on range-of-motion, the smaller Valeo ball is a great tool. If you’re considering a pair of these, this might be an option to explore.

They both seem equally well made, despite their differences.

I would highly recommend this bouncer to any body. Great for throwing against a concrete floor or wall. Excellent is the best word for it. Will be buying the 20 or 25lb one next.

DURABILITY: The rubber material used in construction seems extremely tough.

REBOUNDING: I haven’t had a chance to experiment with inflation levels yet, but rebounding seemed pretty decent.

GRIP: The grip is very securely non-slip.

OVERHARD: These balls are quite hard, which can be either an advantage or a slight disadvantage, depending on how you use it.

INFLATION: The manufacturer provides a standard needle, but is unhelpfully vague in how much pressure is optimal.

DURABILITY: The material is well suited for long term heavy use, which is important for use in rebounding.

REBOUNDING: A moderately firm overhead slam of a 10# ball onto concrete rebounded to around waist high.

GRIP: Very firm despite the size it does  not-slip.

OVERHARD: For rebounding, don’t even think about trying to use these against indoor dry-wall (not strong enough), wood floors (too noisy, bouncy, loud and scuff-prone), or carpeting (wont rebound enough) … smooth concrete (preferably epoxy-sealed), or a re-bounder rig, is best.

Be mindful of the different weights needed for both types of use, I.e., less weight is needed for rebounding than for plyo. This is a very solid and durable ball
